Interventions on old fiber cement roofs presents risks due to the presence of asbestos. Asbestos removal therefore represents an important activity for roofers, with constraints to be respected.
The fight against asbestos
Since 1996, asbestos has been prohibited in the building because it is recognized particularly dangerous for health; Almost all of the fiber-cement roofs made before this date still contain asbestos.
An "asbestos" diagnosis is compulsory in France when selling real estate and according to their condition, the roofs considered to be dangerous and must sometimes even be deposited: there is therefore a real asbestos removal market and the mastery of this subject is often essential in renovation work.
The asbestos removal procedure
Interventions on asbestos covers are subject to a specific procedure in order to protect the roofer.
There are two possible solutions:
The solution by containment, which consists in covering the roof with a solution that will encapsulate asbestos, possibly adding the surface panels.
The second, more complex and more expensive, consists in completely depositing the roof to replace it.
For the realization of an asbestos removal project, a security zone must be delimited. Operators must wear a P3 certified protective mask as well as protective glasses and gloves.
Dimos products for asbestos removal
Fiber-cement roofs are strongly weakening with age and can break during interventions, especially on agricultural buildings.
In partnership with the MSA, social security of farmers, Dimos has developed security, a solution to intervene on fragile roofs in complete safety: these are 3m long aluminum plates, drawn to get fitted on the undulations of the fiber-cement sheets, and thus distribute the weight on 3 plates, and thus avoid going through the roof.
